SCHOLARSHIPS are awarded by the association to attend the annual education conference. The association awards some based on state participation. The application for the foundation (included herein) covers individual requests to attend that event as well as external education opportunities.

POLICIES of the BOARD OF TRUSTEES

  1. The purpose of the National Judges Education and Research Foundation, Inc. (Hereinafter
    "Foundation") is to conduct studies and engage in education and research concerning the procedures, powers and practices of non-attorney judges in limited jurisdiction courts and to assist qualified members of the National Judges Association to attend judicial education institutions whereby they may improve their skill through education.

A. Scholarships

  1. The Foundation will provide four scholarships for the education of qualified active non-attorney judges. They are to be called the Susie Christensen Scholarship, Stan Barnhill Scholarship, James Welsch Scholarship and the Foundation Scholarship.
    a. The Susie Christensen Scholarship is for $800.00 toward tuition plus $200.00 toward the
    conference fee or lodging costs at the recipient's option. The scholarship is for first time applicants.
    b. The Stan Barnhill Scholarship is for $500.00 toward tuition plus $200.00 toward the conference fee or lodging costs at the recipient's option. This scholarship is for subsequent application for judges who have previously received a scholarship.
    c. The James Welsch Scholarship is for $500.00 toward tuition and $200.00 toward the conference fee or lodging costs at the recipient's option. The scholarship is for subsequent application for judges who have previously received a scholarship.
    d. The Foundation Scholarship is for the registration fee for the annual conference of the National
    Judges Association.

B. Qualifications to Receive Scholarships:

  1. For the Christensen, Barnhill and Welsch Scholarships, the applicant must:
    a. attend the National Judicial College or the American Academy;
    b. have been a member of the National Judges Association at least one (1) year; (5/7/02)
    c. have little or no funding source;
    d. have jurisdiction in the subject matter.
  2. For the Foundation Scholarship the applicant must:
    a. have been a member of the National Judges Association for at least (1) year; (5-7-02)
    b. have little or no funding source.
    c. has not received a foundation scholarship in at least five (5) years; (6-4-00)
    d. submit the application no later than March 10th prior to the conference for that year. (6-4-00)
